Eligibility for PAN Card Application by an NRI 

Any NRI qualifying under the IT Act, 1961 is eligible to apply for a NRI PAN card.

Additionally, Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) can also apply for a PAN card. The application process and document requirements for PIOs/OCIs are largely similar to that of NRIs.

Step-by-Step Online Application Process

Application for an NRI PAN card from abroad is now a simple and fully digital process. NRIs can use Protean eGov Technologies (formerly NSDL) as an authorised Indian portal for the same.

Applying Online PAN for NRI 

  1. Visit the Protean PAN Portal.
  2. Select Form Type
    Choose Form 49AA, applicable for individuals not residing in India.
  3. Choose PAN Application Type
    Select the PAN Application Type: New PAN Foreign Citizen (Form 49AA).
  4. Fill Out the Form
    • Enter your name, date of birth, overseas and Indian addresses (if any).
    • Provide email ID and contact number (international number accepted).
  5. Upload Supporting Documents
    • Ensure that all required self-attested documents (in scanned format) are uploaded clearly.
  6. Pay the Application Fee
    • Approx. ₹1020 (for overseas communication).
    • Payment options include credit/debit card, net banking, or demand draft (some restrictions apply based on card origin).
  7. Submit and Note Acknowledgement Number
    After submission, you will receive a 15-digit acknowledgement number for tracking.
  8. Track Your Application

Use your acknowledgement number to track the status on the respective portal.

  1. Download e-PAN (If Opted)
    Once processed, your e-PAN will be emailed. A physical card is also sent to the overseas address if chosen.

Essential Documents for NRI PAN

Here are some of the mandatory self-attested documents required for an NRI PAN application:

1. Proof of Identity (POI)

  • Passport (most commonly accepted)
  • OCI/PIO card (if applicable)
  • Overseas citizenship documents (in some cases)

2. Proof of Address (POA) – Overseas

  • Passport (showing overseas address)
  • Overseas bank account statement
  • Utility bills (electricity, water, gas, not older than 3 months)
  • Driving license issued abroad

3. Indian Address Proof (Optional)

  • Aadhaar (if available)
  • Indian bank statement or utility bill

Providing an overseas address might be sufficient for most NRI PAN applications.

4. Proof of Date of Birth

Passport can serve as both POI and date of birth proof.
